According to estimates by the World Health Organisation, every year approximately 2 million people die (mainly children) due to the lack of water and basic hygiene.
Where?
Rwanda is still afflicted by the enormous problems caused by the French and Belgian colonial domination. These powers have exacerbated the ethnic divisions between Hutu and Tutsi, favouring the latter who generally pertained to the higher classes.
These contrasts were evident in the 1994 genocide with the deaths of over 800.000 people (mainly Tutsi) from which the country is still attempting to recover. The project's area is the city of Gisenyi in the neighbourhood of Muhato, which is combating the problem of a huge demographic increase due to the arrival of many immigrants and exiles from nearby Congo who have taken up even more of the already scarce water resources in the region.
What?
The objective is to construct 5 water tanks to facilitate the conservation and use of rainwater and the providing of potable water to the families in the area. The construction of adequate infrastructure is without a doubt one of the primary objectives to guarantee the local population the conditions for a dignified life.
For who?
The beneficiaries will be all of the families that live in the neighbourhood of Muhato (approximately 30.000 people, the majority of which are women and children). The cisterns will be placed in order to guarantee everyone the possibility of getting water more easily.
