A school for the children of Ruashi (Democratic Republic of Congo)

Where?
In the Democratic Republic of Congo, the first democratic elections in 40 years, in which Joseph Kabila prevailed over Jean-Pierre Bemba, recently took place. The State has still not overcome the enormous internal divisions and the civil war continues to claim thousands of victims, the problems to be resolved are manifold and the structures are oftentimes deficient: healthcare has too high of a cost and there are few families that can afford medical cures and medicines, the level of hygiene is awful, there is no system for garbage collection and the sewer system does not work. The State does not have the chance to finance schooling, which is supported only thanks to humanitarian aid. Half of the children between 6 and 14 years old does not go to school nor have the chance to build a dignified future. The lack of adequate training is, among many, one of the main problems that does not allow the country to raise itself to its feet.
The place in which the project will take place is the city of Ruashi, with approximately 150.000 inhabitants and found in the region of Katanga, to the north-east of Lubumbashi
Even in this small city, as in the rest of the country, there is a lack of essential educative and training structures for children.

What?
The project intends to finance the restructuring of the elementary school Hodari II in the city of Ruashi. The school counts on 1027 students divided into 16 classes. The girls are divided into 2 groups and the lessons take place either in the morning or in the afternoon, in order to overcome the lack of classes. The interventions regard the reconstruction of the pavement and the reparation of the benches. Additionally, we intend to distribute the basic scholastic material (notebooks, pens, pencils, erasers) to each girl.

For who?
In the city of Ruashi there is a shelter, a high school, and two elementary schools managed by the Sisters. The beneficiaries of this project will be 1027 girls of the elementary school Hodari II, between the ages of 6 and 12, that will be finally be able to have a dignified basic instruction essential for their growth and to make a better future.
