 Reading is an exclusive privilege of human beings: no other living creature possesses the same capabilities.
Books take us to other countries in which we find characters that can become our life teachers and who can help us to find answers to our questions.
Not everyone, however, has the possibility of doing it, non all can allow themselves to buy books and let themselves be whisked away by their words. In the Colegio 'Nuestra Señora de los Treinta y Tres', this is a privilege that goes to few people. Because of this, it is necessary 'to extend the knowledge of the library', to give to the students the basic tools to comprehend, to understand, to learn...
 Where?
In the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, in the similarly named capital of the department of Treinta y Tres.
The economic recession and the serious financial crisis begun in 2002 continue, despite the recovery in the last two years, to negatively influence the quality of life of the people. The economy is in a difficult phase of stagnation and Treinta y tres is, unfortunately, one of the poorest cities in the country; to add, worrying statistics indicate that this is an area with the highest level of youth depression in the whole nation. The people live predominantly from work in the fields; in particular, rice production. The families are extremely poor and, because of the high birth rate, the government will not guarantee the youth an adequate education.
What?
The objective is to adequately equip the library of the institute by acquiring books, audio/ video tools and teacher's aids (computer, stereo) for the Colegio 'Nuestra Señora de los Treinta y Tres' in the city of Treinta y Tres. This way, it will be possible to create a literary workshop as well as a multipurpose and play centre for the students of the high school.
For who?
The beneficiaries of the project will be around 150 students from the ages between 11 and 17 years from the Colegio 'Nuestra Señora de los Treinta y Tres'.
It is worth noting that more than half of the children in the institute come from poor families, some of which cannot even afford the admission cost of the school. Access to the literary workshop and to the audio/video tools will be given also to other kids that are not students of the school, in order to render the Colegio a multipurpose and socio-culture centre for the entire area.
