Adoptions at Distance and the Millennium Development Goals
In the framework of the strategies of action to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, VIDES International deeply believes in the efficacy of the ADOPTIONS AT DISTANCE, especially in support of achieving MDG n.2 (Achieve universal primary education) and MDG n.4 (Reduce child mortality).
Two frequently asked questions are as follows:
How can the adoptions at distance guarantee a complete course of primary education for children?
Further, how can the adoptions at distance reduce child mortality?
Goal 2: Achieve universal primary education
VIDES International can guarantee primary education for children in target communities, thanks to the adoptions at distance. This underlines VIDES International conviction regarding the essential importance of education as a means through which children can build their future. Thanks to the utilization of donations from Italian supporters, it is possible to pay school fees, uniforms, teaching equipment and other materials necessary to assist children in completing their course of studies. Further, in those countries where there is a high level of discrimination against girls, VIDES International has initiated various strategies in order to facilitate their access to education. In India, for example, the local volunteers have worked with many families to develop ‘pairing’ mechanisms to ensure the education of girls become a priority. In these instances, the boys of the families were supported in their study only if their sisters were given the same possibility to go to school. This kind of strategy has been successful and has given many girls a possibility they would otherwise be denied.
Goal 4: Reduce child mortality
In addition to primary education, a child also needs something else in order to grow up healthy, both physically and mentally. It is for this reason that VIDES International, thanks to the adoptions at distance, is able to guarantee a nutritional food and basic medical assistance for children in target communities. This is essential support to facilitate a child’s ability to undertake a course of studies.
VIDES International, thanks to the adoptions at distance, is able to guarantee primary education, nutritional food and basic medical assistance for more than 10,000 children in 46 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. To date, VIDES International has reached 152 localities. However, we are always ready to expand our outreach efforts to as many localities as possible in order to make the adoption at distance a means for the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.
