VIDES organizes a celebration on the World Day against Child Labour
The World Day against Child Labour celebrated on 12 June 2009. The World Day this year marks the tenth anniversary of the adoption of the landmark ILO Convention No. 182, which addresses the need for action to tackle the worst forms of child labour. Whilst celebrating progress made during the past ten years, the World Day will highlight the continuing challenges, with a focus on exploitation of girls in child labour.
On this auspicious day we had an inaugural function of VIDES Organization at Holy Child Higher Secondary School Guwahati. Sixteen (16) young Volunteers enrolled in our VIDES organization to work together for the promotion of Human Rights, education of children, women, young at risk and also to reach out to the poor and the needy.
Shri Bhandra Borah – former Head of the Department of Library and Information of Guwahati University was the Chief Guest. Rev. Sr.Alphonsa Kurisingal, the Provincial Delegate for VIDES Association, Rev. Sr. Bridget Kurian, Sr. Superior of Holy Child, Rev. Sr. Annie Villuviruthil, the Principal of Holy Child Higher Secondary School.
The programmed began with a prayer service. The students performed a skit on “Child Labour and Discrimination of the poor.” The Chief Guests Mr. Bhandra Borah in his message encouraged the students to work for the upliftment of the poor. And Sr.Alphonsa Kurisingal, the Provincial Delegate of VIDES Guwahati, congratulated the local delegate, Sr. khijurina Tirkey for her interest and love to introduce VIDES association in the School as well as in the neighbourhood. And she said, Education for a child is the first steps towards obtaining Decent Work and a decent livelihood as an adult. Research has proven that educating girls is one of the most effective ways of tackling poverty. Educated girls are more likely to have better income as adults, marry later, have fewer and healthier children, and to have decision making power within the household. They are also more likely to ensure that their own children are educated, helping to avoid future child labour. Tackling child labour among girls and promoting their right to education, is therefore an important element of broader strategies to promote development and Decent Work.
The Inaugural function ended with a song and realizing of Doves as a sign of peace
