Il Segretario Generale Ban invita tutti gli Stati a non ampliare i propri arsenali nucleari, e di ridurre stockpiles
Prevenire un ulteriore ampliamento degli arsenali nucleari e ridurre l’accumulo di armi dovrebbe essere uno degli obiettivi principali della Conferenza sul Disarmo di quest’anno, come affermato oggi dal Segretario Generale delle Nazioni Unite Ban Ki-moon in occasione del meeting della prima sessione svoltasi a Ginevra.
“Mantenere la moratoria sui test nucleari è ugualmente importante, e dovrebbe restare in vigore almeno fino a quando non entrerà in pieno vigore Trattato Globale sul Divieto dei Test Nucleari,” ha dichiarato, invitando tutti gli Stati che non l’hanno ancora fatto di firmare o ratificare il patto.
Ban ha inoltre messo in evidenza l’enorme quantità di denaro speso per l’acquisto di armi e ha suggerito che potrebbe essere utilizzato per finanziare gli Obiettivi di Sviluppo del Millennio.

Secretary-General Ban urges all States not to expand nuclear arsenals, reduce stockpiles
Preventing further expansion of nuclear arsenals and reducing weapon stockpiles should be the key aims of this year’s Conference on Disarmament, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said today in his message to the meeting’s first session in Geneva.
“Maintaining the moratorium on nuclear tests is equally important, and should be in effect at least till the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty enters into full force,” he said, urging all States that have not yet done so to sign or ratify that pact.
Mr. Ban also highlighted the massive amount of money spent on arms and suggested this would be better used helping to fund the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
