Il VIDES Internazionale ha partecipato alla Conferenza del DPI e delle ONG che si è svolta a New York
Il tema della Conferenza del Dipartimento di Pubblica Informazione/ONG delle Nazioni Unite del 2006 è stato: “Il commercio incompiuto: le partnership efficaci per la salvaguardia dell’uomo e lo sviluppo sostenibile”. La partnership ha costituito il tema principale di discussione tra le ONG e tra queste e gli speaker.
Le partnership riguardano tre settori della società: il governo, la società civile (ONG) e i privati (commercio). Uno dei temi emersi durante la conferenza è stato che per ottenere un’effettiva salvaguardia dell’uomo e uno sviluppo sostenibile, tutti e tre i settori devono lavorare insieme. Le ONG hanno dovuto trovare il modo per coinvolgere il settore privato nell’obiettivo del raggiungimento dello sviluppo sostenibile. Molti esempi sono stati forniti al settore commerciale per incoraggiare le pratiche del giusto commercio a livello micro e macro, e per aumentare la concessione di microcrediti e il credit medio a color che di solito sono esclusi dal credito tradizionale (come ad esempio le donne e gli indigeni). In questo modo l’obbiettivo della società civile di raggiungere uno sviluppo sostenibile può essere raggiunto incoraggiando nel frattempo le pratiche di un commercio etico. I benefici sono aumentati. Come le ONG hanno ricercato una partnership efficace con i governi, così la ricercano col settore privato. Un altro elemento interessante è l’incredibile forza economica che le ONG hanno attraverso i loro impieghi e le loro spese: ciò può essere utilizzato come punto a favore nel trattare con il settore privato.
Il secondo tema che ha colpito durante la conferenza è stata l’insistenza della ONG sull’importanza di creare una rete tra ONG attraverso la tecnologia informatica. Molte di queste vorrebbero che l’ONU fornisca loro uno spazio (preferibilmente sul sito ufficiale dell’ONU) per essere in grado di incontrarsi, navigare, e creare delle relazioni con altre ONG che lavorano negli stessi settori. Siccome l’ONU si sta dando da fare per ricostruire il sito di New York, e siccome il DPI non ha un’unità operativa specifica per creare un network sul sito web, questo suggerimento è stato tenuto in grande considerazione sebbene non siano ancora stati fissati i passi per creare dialogo e partnership su internet.
Un altro fattore da considerare è che alcune ONG possono non avere adeguati mezzi tecnologici e possono non essere in grado di partecipare a questo network, con la risultante limitazione di partecipazione solo delle ONG più facoltose.
Il terzo elemento d’importanza è la generale tensione che c’è stata. Le ONG capiscono che l’attuale clima di tensione nell’ONU, specialmente a causa delle riforme in atto, può portare la discussione oltre. Ciò potrebbe portare anche l’attenzione a distogliersi dagli Obiettivi del Millennio. Comunque la speranza che gli Obiettivi del Millennio possano essere raggiunti e la consapevolezza che la realtà degli obiettivi debba essere non solo raggiunta, ma che debba essere anche sostenibile, sono molto forti.

The 2006 UN DPI/NGO Conference theme was “Unfinished Business: Effective Partnerships for Human Security and Sustainable Development”. Partnerships was the main topic of discussion amongst NGOs themselves and speakers.
Partnerships and relationships involve three sectors of society: government, civic (NGOs), and private (business). One of the themes that emerged during the conference was that to have truly effective human security and sustainable development all three must be working together. It was an especially important theme that the NGOs learn how to educate and involve the private sector in the importance of sustainable development. Several examples were given of businesses encouraging micro and macro fair trade practices, and also micro and medium credit to those who are usually overlooked (ex: women and indigenous). In this way, the goals of civic society can be for a truly sustainable development can be achieved while encouraging ethical business practices. The benefits are widespread. Just as NGOs have been seeking effective partnerships with governments, they should also be seeking those with businesses. Another interesting note to this topic was the incredible economic force that NGOs have through their employment and expenses, this can be used to NGOs’ advantage when dealing with the private sector.
The second theme that struck during the conference was the insistence of NGOs on the importance of networking among themselves through computer technology. Many wanted the UN to provide them a space (preferable on the UN site) to be able to meet, explore, and partner with other NGOs that work in the same fields. Due to the fact that the UN is currently focused on the rebuilding of the New York site, and that DPI has no taskforce specifically assigned to a networking area on the website, this suggestion was heeded although there were no concrete steps taken by any party to start such an area for dialogue and partnerships on the internet. Another factor to consider is that some NGOs may not have the technology or be able to afford to participate in such a networking site, therefore limiting such a partnership tool to wealthier NGOs.
The third item of notice was a general tension. NGOs understand that the current political climate in the UN, and especially the upcoming renovations, may physically force them further into the background of UN discussions. This may also force the focus on the MDGs to a sideline. However, there still was hope at the progress of the MDGs and a realism that the goals are not just to be met, but need to be sustainable.
