L’alto funzionario per l’assistenza umanitaria durante un incontro con i leader dei ribelli ugandesi chiede il rilascio di bambini e donne
Il Sotto Segretario Generale per gli Affari Umanitari Jan Egeland ieri ha incontrato Joseph Kony, leader LRA, Lord’s Resistance Army. La discussione ha coinvolto anche il Vice Presidente del Sudan meridionale, così come i membri dei gruppi negozianti ugandesi e del LRA. Egeland ha chiesto al LRL di rilasciare i bambini, le donne ed i non combattenti.
Ha ricordato che i leader del LRA hanno accettato di riunirsi nuovamente entro un mese per dare una risposta a questa richiesta, e hanno accettato anche di identificare, entro il 22 novembre, le persone malate e ferite bisognose di cure.
“Se il nostro tentativo di portare la pace avrà successo […], ci sono buone possibilità che la pace si diffonda in tutta la regione. Fallire potrebbe portare conseguenze catastrofiche […].”
Le Nazioni Unite hanno iniziato a fornire assistenza umanitaria alle aree colpite dalla violenza del LRA, mentre l’organizzazione non governativa (ONG) Caritas sta fornendo servizi di base alle zone d’incontro del LRA. Le Nazioni Unite forniranno supporto logistico al processo di pace attraverso la Missione ONU in Sudan (UNMIS, UN Mission in Sudan) e ci saranno anche osservatori della Squadra di Monitoraggio per la Cessazione delle Ostilità (Cessation of Hostilities Monitoring Team).

UN aid chief calls for release of children and women while meeting Ugandan rebel leader
Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Jan Egeland yesterday met Joseph Kony, the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) leader. The discussion involved also the Vice-President of South Sudan, as well as members of the Ugandan and LRA negotiating teams. Mr. Egeland called on the LRA to release children, women and other non-combatants.
He noted that the LRA leadership had agreed to come back within a month with an answer to this request and they had also agreed to identify, by 22 November, those sick and wounded in need of care.
“If we succeed in this peace effort […], there is a good chance peace will break out in the region as a whole. Failing to do so may have catastrophic consequences […].”
The UN has begun to provide humanitarian assistance to the areas affected by LRA violence, while the non-governmental organization (NGO) Caritas is providing basic services to the LRA assembly areas. The UN will provide logistical support to the peace process through the UN Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) and will also be observers of the Cessation of Hostilities Monitoring Team.
