Annan sottolinea la necessità di progressi nei diritti umani in Myanmar e annuncia la visita di un alto funzionario politico
Kofi Annan oggi ha sottolineato la necessità di “concreti passi avanti” da parte di Myanmar in materia di diritti umani, riforme in senso democratico e rappacificazione a livello nazionale, e ha annunciato che il Sotto Segretario Generale per le Relazioni Politiche, Ibrahim Gambari, visiterà il Paese del Sud-est asiatico dal 9 al 12 novembre.
Il Segretario Generale ha dichiarato che la visita è “parte di un processo di dialogo che potrebbe portare a rafforzare la cooperazione fra le Nazioni Unite e il Myanmar”.
Annan ha ripetutamente chiesto che fosse rilasciata Suu Kyi. Durante la sua precedente visita a maggio Gambari ha incontrato non solo lei ma anche i membri del suo partito, la Lega Nazionale per la Democrazia (NLD, National League for Democracy), e ha dichiarato che il Governo sembra interessato ad intraprendere un dialogo con la comunità internazionale.

Annan stresses need for human rights progress in Myanmar as top political officer to visit
Kofi Annan today emphasized the need for “tangible steps forward” by Myanmar on human rights, democratic reform and national reconciliation, as he announced the Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, Ibrahim Gambari, will visit the South East Asian country from 9 to 12 November.
The Secretary-General said the visit is “part of a process of dialogue that could lead to strengthened cooperation between the United Nations and Myanmar”.
Mr. Annan has repeatedly called for the release of Ms. Suu Kyi. During his May visit Mr. Gambari met not only with her but also members of her party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), and said that the isolated Government seemed willing to engage in dialogue with the international community.
