Annan afferma che fame e povertà devono essere affrontate insieme
Durante la settimana caratterizzata sia dalla Giornata Mondiale Internazionale per l’Eliminazione della Povertà, dalla Giornata Mondiale dell’Alimentazione, il Segretario Generale delle Nazioni Unite Kofi Annan ha esortato ad intraprendere un’azione simultanea su entrambe le questioni, ammonendo che sarà impossibile eliminare una problematica escludendo l’altra.
Inoltre, Annan ha dichiarato che il mondo non ha fatto progressi sufficienti per la realizzazione degli Obiettivi di Sviluppo del Millennio, in particolare per il primo obiettivo, riguardante l’eliminazione dell’estrema povertà e la fame entro il 2015. Ha ripetuto che il tema di quest’anno è la necessità di migliorare l’agricoltura, e ha sottolineato il fatto che più di due terzi della popolazione che soffre la fame vive nelle aree rurali, e uno dei mezzi di aiuto più efficaci è aumentare gli investimenti nel settore agricolo.

Hunger and poverty have to be tackled together, says Annan
In a week marking both World Poverty Eradication Day and World Food Day, United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan today called for simultaneous action on both issues, warning that it will be impossible to eradicate one blight without the other.
Moreover, Mr. Annan warned that the world has made insufficient progress towards the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), particularly goal number one for eradicating extreme poverty and hunger by 2015. He repeated that this year’s theme is the need to bolster agriculture, noting that more than two thirds of the world’s hungry live in rural areas, and increased investment in agriculture is one of the most effective means to help them.)
“The world has the resources and the know-how to make hunger history. What we need is political will and resolve”, he said.
