Giornata dei Diritti Umani
La povertà è insieme causa e conseguenza delle violazioni dei diritti umani. E’ più probabile che siano povere le persone a cui vengono negati i diritti. Di solito trovano più difficile o impossibile partecipare al mercato del lavoro e hanno poco o nessun accesso ai servizi e alle risorse di base. Inoltre, i poveri in molte società non possono usufruire dei diritti all’istruzione, alla salute e alla casa semplicemente perché non possono permetterselo.
I Governi e si sono impegnati a fare qualcosa al riguardo attraverso la firma di numerosi trattati sui diritti umani e unendosi al consenso internazionale per far sì che la povertà diventi storia, attraverso la Dichiarazione del Millennio e gli Obiettivi di Sviluppo del Millennio. L’attuazione dei diritti umani – compresa la lotta contro la povertà -- è un dovere, non una mera aspirazione.

Human Rights Day
Poverty is a cause and a product of human rights violations. People whose rights are denied are more likely to be poor. Generally they find it harder or impossible to participate in the labour market and have little or no access to basic services and resources. Meanwhile, the poor in many societies cannot enjoy their rights to education, health and housing simply because they cannot afford them.
Governments have committed to do something about it by accepting a number of human rights treaties and by signing on to the international consensus to make poverty history, through the Millennium Declaration and the Millennium Development Goals. The realization of human rights – including the fight against poverty -- is a duty, not a mere aspiration.
