Messaggio alla sessione speciale del Consiglio dei Diritti Umani sulla situazione umanitaria in Darfur
Kofi Annan in occasione della sessione speciale del Consiglio dei Diritti Umani ha inviato un messaggio sulla situazione in Darfur: “nelle ultime settimane, i combattimenti sono aumentati, e le condizioni della popolazione civile sono peggiorate. […] e la violenza si è diffusa in due Stati vicini”.
Ha dichiarato che “il Consiglio di Sicurezza e il Segretariato sono attivamente impegnati nel cercare un accordo con il Governo del Sudan […] e si assiste a uno sforzo maggiore, portato avanti dall’Unione Africana e dalle Nazioni Unite, per trovare una soluzione politica alla crisi”. “E’ essenziale che il Consiglio invii un messaggio chiaro e unificato per ammonire tutte le parti coinvolte, in nome di tutto il mondo, affermando che l’attuale situazione è semplicemente inaccettabile […]”, ha aggiunto.
Infine, ha invitato il Consiglio “a non perdere tempo e inviare al più presto una squadra di esperti indipendenti e riconosciuti a livello internazionale per indagare sulle ultime escalation di violenza. E’ fondamentale intraprendere azioni per prevenire ulteriori violazioni […]”.

The Secretary-General Message to the special session of the Human Rights Council on the human rights situation in Darfur
Kofi Annan at the special session of the Human Rights Council sent a message about the situation in Darfur: “In recent weeks, the fighting has escalated, and conditions for the civilian population have got even worse. […] and the violence has now spread to two neighbouring countries”.
He said that “the Security Council and the Secretariat are actively engaged in seeking agreement with the Government of Sudan […] and there is an intensified effort, led by the African Union and the United Nations, to find a political solution to the crisis”. “It is essential that this Council send a clear and united message to warn all concerned, on behalf of the whole world, that the current situation is simply unacceptable […]”, he added.
Finally, he urged the Council “to lose no time in sending a team of independent and universally respected experts to investigate the latest escalation of abuses. It is urgent that we take action to prevent further violations […]”.
