Annan – Il Consiglio dei Diritti Umani dovrebbe allargare la propria prospettiva al di là del Medio Oriente
Parlando con i giornalisti presso la sede europea delle Nazioni Unite a Ginevra ad Annan è stato chiesto di esprimere la sua opinione circa la credibilità del Consiglio dei Diritti Umani.
“Ci si aspetta che [il Consiglio] verifichi i dati riguardanti i diritti umani di tutti i Paesi,” ha risposto. “Spero che man mano che si va avanti, allargheranno il loro lavoro e controlleranno le situazioni umanitarie di altri Paesi per occuparsene, poiché se si concentrano solo sulla questione Israelo-palestinese, sentiremo i commenti che avete indicato.”
Quando gli viene chiesto quale sia il suo più grande rimpianto, Annan afferma che è il fatto che il Consiglio di Sicurezza non sia riuscito a fermare la Guerra in Iraq. Ha sottolineato che sia la Siria che l’Iran dovrebbero “usare la propria influenza e fare qualsiasi cosa in loro potere per aiutare a portare la pace in Iraq,” facendo notare che i Paesi vicini possono esacerbare o ridurre le situazioni critiche.

UN Human Rights Council should broaden its focus beyond Middle East – Annan
Speaking to reporters at the UN’s European Headquarters in Geneva Mr. Annan was asked about the credibility of the Human Rights Council.
The Council “was expected to look at the human rights record of all countries,” he replied. “I hope as we move forward, they will broaden their work and look at human rights situations of other countries and deal with it, because if they concentrate only on the Palestinian-Israeli issue, we will hear the comments that you have indicated.”
Asked about his greatest regret, Mr. Annan said it was the fact that the Security Council was not able to stop the war in Iraq. He stressed that both Syria and Iran should be urged “to use their influence and to do whatever they can to help pacify Iraq,” noting that neighbours can either exacerbate or de-escalate critical situations.
