Il capo d’assistenza umanitaria dell’ONU chiede al Medio Oriente di dare di più nella sua assistenza tramite l’ONU
Il Coordinatore per l’Assistenza nelle Emergenze, Jan Egeland, ha fatto i complimenti al Medio Oriente per il suo lavoro caritativo e umanitario, però gli ha anche chiesto di collaborare più da vicino con l’organizzazione e dare più assistenza attraverso l’ONU. Ha detto che facendo così, ci sarà un riconoscimento globale più grande del contributo attuale di questi stati, ed una collaborazione internazionale più da vicino sarà “vincente” per tutti.
“C’è bisogno di riconoscere il ruolo positivo che il Medio Oriente sta effettuando nella distribuzione di assistenza caritativa e umanitaria. Tuttavia, sottolineerei anche che una partecipazione più grande nel sistema multilaterale potrebbe aiutare a creare questo riconoscimento,” ha detto ai rappresentanti dei governi, dell’ONU e dello sviluppo nella Conferenza Internazionale per l’Assistenza Umanitaria e lo Sviluppo a Dubai.“La risposta umanitaria internazionale sarà rinforzata attraverso questa cooperazione” ha aggiunto.
Jan Egeland ha anche sottolineato che la comunità umanitaria continua ad essere “vista come troppo legata all’ONU e troppo filo-occidentale. Riteniamo eccellente il rapporto di lavoro che abbiamo con le organizzazioni Red Crescent, con gli Emirati Arabi Uniti (EAU) ed altri Stati del Golfo. Il nostro dialogo con le organizzazioni caritative del mondo arabo-musulmano è aperto, franco e costruttivo, e ci rende capace di capire meglio le sfide specifiche e gli impedimenti,” ha concluso.

UN relief chief calls on Middle East to channel more aid through United Nations
Praising countries of the Middle East for their charitable and humanitarian work, the United Nations Emergency Relief Coordinator, Jan Egeland, called for them to work more closely with the world body and channel more development aid through it. By doing so, he said, there would be greater global recognition of the contribution these States make while closer international partnerships would be a “win-win situation” for all.
“There needs to be greater recognition of the positive role that the Middle East plays in the delivery of charitable and humanitarian assistance. However, I would also point out that greater participation within the multilateral system could help bring about that recognition,” he told government, UN and development representatives at the Dubai International Humanitarian Aid and Development Conference and Exhibition. “The international humanitarian response will be strengthened through greater cooperation” he added.
Mr. Egeland also pointed out that the humanitarian community continued to be “perceived as too UN- and too Western-centric,” something the UN was trying to rectify. “We also value the excellent working relationship we have with Red Crescent organizations of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and other Gulf States. Our open, frank and constructive dialogue with charitable organizations from the Arab-Muslim world enables us better to understand specific challenges and constraints,” he concluded.
