Ex bambino-soldato pubblica la propria storia, contribuendo agli sforzi delle Nazioni Unite di limitare l’uso dei bambini in guerra
A Long Way Gone, la prima autobiografia di un bambino-soldato della Sierra Leone, è stata inaugurata presso la sede dell’UNICEF di New York la notte scorsa, pochi giorni dopo la conferenza di Parigi ‘Free Children from War’ (Liberate i bambini dalla guerra) sponsorizzata dall’agenzia, nel quale 59 Paesi si sono impegnati a mettere fine all’illegittimo reclutamento e uso dei bambini nei conflitti armati. All’età di 16 anni è stato portato via dai combattimenti dall’UNICEF, e grazie all’aiuto dello staff presso il suo centro di riabilitazione ha imparato a perdonare se stesso e a riconquistare la sua umanità.

Former child soldier launches memoirs in UN effort to curb use of children in war
A Long Way Gone, the first-hand account of a Sierra Leonean child soldier’s odyssey, was launched at UNICEF headquarters in New York last night just days after the agency sponsored the international Paris conference ‘Free Children from War’, at which 59 countries committed themselves to putting an end to the unlawful recruitment and use of children in armed conflicts. At age 16, he was removed from fighting by UNICEF, and through the help of the staff at his rehabilitation centre he learned how to forgive himself and to regain his humanity.
