Le autorità sudanesi e l’UNICEF fanno squadra per trovare delle famiglie ai bambini abbandonati
Il Fondo delle Nazioni Unite per l’Infanzia (UNICEF) e le autorità sudanesi hanno lanciato una campagna per impedire che la gente abbandoni i neonati e per trovare delle famiglie provvisorie onde evitare di piazzare i bambini in istituti.
Una valutazione congiunta portata avanti nel 2003 dal Governo e dall’UNICEF ha scoperto che circa 100 neonati vengono abbandonati nelle strade della capitale Khartoum ogni mese. “La metà di questi stava morendo per strada, e gli altri indirizzati senza alternative agli istituti competenti,” ha affermato l’agenzia in un dichiarazione stampa rilasciata ieri.
Queste “statistiche allarmanti” hanno portato il Ministro degli Affari Sociali di Khartoum e l’UNICEF a sviluppare un programma pilota per spostarli dagli istituti verso famiglie di accoglienza.
Negli ultimi tre anni, con lo sviluppo del programma pilota della famiglia e con le organizzazioni non governative ad aiutare la gestione degli orfani, più di 2,500 bambini sono stati trasferiti al sistema di accoglienza familiare.

Sudanese officials and UNICEF team up to find families for abandoned children
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and Sudanese authorities have launched a campaign to prevent people from abandoning infants and to find temporary families to avoid placing the children in institutions.
A joint assessment carried out in 2003 by the Government and UNICEF found that an estimated 100 newborns were being abandoned on the streets of the capital Khartoum every month. “Half of these were dying on the streets, the others left with no alternative but institutional care,” the agency stated in a press release issued yesterday.
These “alarming statistics” led the Ministry of Social Affairs for Khartoum State and UNICEF to develop a pilot programme to move away from institutional care towards the placement of children with alternative families.
In the last three years, as the pilot family care programme was developed and non-governmental organizations assisted in the management of the orphanage, more than 2,500 children were moved to the family care system.
