Secondo le notizie ufficiali ONU, ex bambino soldato chiede di rafforzare gli sforzi per proteggere i bambini
Nel decimo anniversario sull’innovativo studio dell’impatto che hanno i conflitti sui bambini, due alti funzionari delle Nazioni Unite e un ex-bambino soldato del Sierra Leone hanno oggi fatto appello a maggiori sforzi per proteggere i bambini e fatto notare il molto lavoro che resta da fare.
Radhika Coomaraswamy, Rappresentante Speciale del Segretario Generale sui Bambini e i Conflitti Armati; Hilde Johnson, Direttore Deputato Esecutivo del Fondo delle Nazioni Unite per i Bambini (UNICEF); e Ishmael Beah, ora un giovane attivista e autore di "Long Way Gone," hanno presentato un conciso rapporto sui progressi fatti nell’ultima decade e le sfide che rimangono da affrontare.
Il Rappresentante Speciale ha fatto notare come tali progressi avuti negli ultimi dieci anni siano avvenuti soprattutto nella lotta contro l’impunità e i crimini di guerra riguardanti i bambini ed i conflitti armati. Nel 2005, il Consiglio di Sicurezza ha adottato la risoluzione 1612, che ha stabilito un meccanismo per monitorare le violazioni gravi sia da parte dei Governi che dagli insorti, concentrando l’attenzione soprattutto su tali crimini come il reclutamento dei bambini soldato.

UN officials, former child soldier call for bolstered efforts to protect children
On the tenth anniversary of a groundbreaking study on the impact of armed conflict on children, two top United Nations officials and a former Sierra Leonean child soldier today appealed for greater efforts to protect children and noted that much work remains to be done.
Radhika Coomaraswamy, the Secretary-General's Special Representative on Children and Armed Conflict; Hilde Johnson, Deputy Executive Director of the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF); and Ishmael Beah, now a youth activist and author of "Long Way Gone," briefed reporters in New York on a new report chronicling progress made in the past decade and challenges that remain to be tackled.
The Special Representative said the progress has been made in the past 10 years, especially in the fight against impunity and war crimes with regard to children and armed conflict. In 2005, the Security Council adopted Resolution 1612, which established a mechanism to monitor grave violations by both governments and insurgents, focusing especially on such crimes as the recruitment of child soldiers.
