Il Consiglio dei Diritti Umani conclude il dibattito sulla missione di alto livello per la situazione dei diritti umani in Darfur
Il Consiglio sui Diritti Umani ha concluso questo pomeriggio il dibattito generale sul rapporto della missione che valuta la situazione dei diritti umani in Darfur e i bisogni del Sudan a questo riguardo.
Il Capo missione Jody Williams, rispondendo ai commenti e alle domande sul rapporto ha affermato che per coloro che lavorano nell’interesse delle vittime civili in tutto il mondo e in special modo per le vittime di governi corrotti, la credibilità di questo Consiglio non può più poggiarsi sul consenso e sulla collegialità per cercare soluzioni.
La comunità internazionale si era assunta la responsabilità di garantire protezione in seguito al genocidio in Ruanda, dove niente era stato fatto per proteggere la gente del luogo. Il mondo si era vergognato e aveva detto “basta”.
Se il Consiglio scegliesse di non prendere in considerazione il rapporto, tale decisione avrebbe un impatto sul Consiglio - non sui membri della missione. Se il lavoro della missione avesse apportato in qualche modo dei benefici alla popolazione del Darfur, qualsiasi fosse la decisione del Consiglio, allora avrebbe fatto il proprio lavoro, cioè cercare di alleviare la sofferenza della popolazione del Darfur.
I delegati degli Stati hanno inoltre reso brevi dichiarazioni esortando l’Assemblea Generale ad adottare la Dichiarazione dei Diritti della Popolazione Indigena come approvata dal Consiglio dei Diritti Umani.

 Human rights Council concludes debate on high level mission on situation of human rights in Darfur
The Human Rights Council concluded this afternoon its general debate on the report of the high-level mission to assess the situation of human rights in Darfur and the needs of Sudan in that regard. It then concluded its discussion on follow-up to decisions taken by the Council.
Responding to comments and questions about the report of the high-level mission, Jody Williams, Head of the mission, said that, for those working on behalf of the civilian victims everywhere in the world, and more importantly, for the victims of abusive Governments themselves, the credibility of this Council could probably not comfortably rest on consensus and collegiality to find solutions. The responsibility to protect was developed by the international community in response to the genocide in Rwanda, where nothing had been done to protect the people there. The world had hung its head in shame and said "never again". If the Council chose not to consider the report, that decision would have an impact on the Council – not on the members of the mission. If the work of the mission benefited the people in Darfur in any way, whatever the decision of the Council, then it would have done its job, which was to try to alleviate the suffering of the people of Darfur.
The country delegates made brief statements urging the General Assembly to adopt the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples as adopted by the Human Rights Council.
