Bangladesh: Ban Ki-moon promette pieno supporto delle Nazioni Unite a seguito del ciclone mortale
Il Segretario Generale Ban Ki-moon ha oggi esternato la sua crescente preoccupazione dopo la devastazione e il crescente numero di morti lasciati dietro dal Ciclone Sidr dopo che ha lacerato il Bangladesh e ha affermato che le Nazioni Unite sono pronte a fare tutto il possibile per aiutare nello sforzo di soccorso.
I rapporti dei media dicono che oltre 2,000 persone sono morte a causa del Ciclone Sidr, il quale ha colpito il sudovest della costa del Bangladesh nel tardo pomeriggio di Giovedì ora locale, portando venti superiori ai 240 chilometri orari e aumentando improvvisamente le acque con onde alte fino a cinque metri. Il numero dei morti sembra destinato ad aumentare ulteriormente.
In una dichiarazione del suo portavoce, Mr Ban ha espresso “le sue più sentite condoglianze alla gente e al governo del Bangladesh per le numerose vittime e per l’avvenuta distruzione, e la piena solidarietà del sistema ONU in questo momento di crisi.”

Bangladesh: Ban Ki-moon pledges full support of UN in wake of deadly cyclone
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon voiced his mounting concern today at the trail of devastation and increasing death toll left by Cyclone Sidr after it tore into Bangladesh and he stressed that the United Nations stands ready to do all it can to help in the relief effort.
Media reports say that more than 2,000 people have been reported killed as a result of Cyclone Sidr, which struck the southwest coast of Bangladesh late on Thursday local time, bringing winds of more than 240 kilometres per hour and a water surge that created waves up to five metres high. The death toll is expected to climb further.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Mr. Ban expressed “his profound condolences to the people and Government of Bangladesh for the many deaths and the destruction involved, and the full solidarity of the UN system at this time of crisis.”
