Noeleen Heyzer nominata Sotto-Segretario-Generale per Dirigere la Commissione Economica e Sociale delle Nazioni Unite per l’Asia e il Pacifico (Economic and Social Commission for Asia and Pacific, ESCAP)
Noeleen Heyzer è stata nominata Segretario Esecutivo della Commissione Economica per l’Asia e il Pacifico con il rango di Sotto-Segretario-Generale. E’ stata il primo direttore esecutivo proveniente dal Sud del mondo a dirigere l’UNIFEM. Durante la sua direzione, l’UNIFEM ha aiutato i Paesi a formulare e implementare la legislazione e le politiche per mettere in pratica i diritti e la tutela delle donne. Prima di entrare a far parte dell’UNIFEM, la Heyzer ha lavorato per la Commisssione Economica e Sociale dell’Asia e il Pacifico dove si è concentrata sulla disoccupazione giovanile e la preparazione della Terza Conferenza Mondiale sulle Donne. E’ stata anche Direttrice del Programma di Genere del Centro di Sviluppo per l’Asia e il Pacifico. Ha ricevuto numerosi premi, fra i quali il UNA-Harvard Leadership Award, il Woman of Distinction Award da parte del Comitato ONU-ONG sullo Status delle Donne, il premio NCRW "Women Who Make a Difference", e la medaglia Dag Hammarskjöld data "a una persona che ha promosso, ...i valori che hanno ispirato Dag Hammarskjöld come Segretario Generale delle Nazioni Unite e in generale nella sua vita: compassione, umanità e impegno alla solidarietà e cooperazione internazionale."

Noeleen Heyzer Appointed Under-Secretary-General to Head the UN Economic and Social Commmission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP)
Noeleen Heyzer has been appointed Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Asia and the Pacific with the rank of Under-Secretary-General. She has been the first executive director from the South to head UNIFEM. Through her leadership, UNIFEM has assisted countries to formulate and implement legislation and policies to realize women's security and rights. Before joining UNIFEM, Ms. Heyzer served in the Economic and Social Commission of the Asia and Pacific Region where she focused on youth employment and the preparation for the Third World Conference on Women. She was also Director of the Gender Programme of the Asia and Pacific Development Centre. She has received several awards including the UNA-Harvard Leadership Award, the Woman of Distinction Award from the UN-NGO Committee on the Status of Women, NCRW "Women Who Make a Difference", and the Dag Hammarskjöld medal given to "a person who has promoted, ...the values that inspired Dag Hammarskjöld as Secretary-General of the United Nations and generally in his life: compassion, humanism and commitment to international solidarity and cooperation."
