L’ONU chiede la protezione dei civili in Sri Lanka dopo i 20 morti e le dozzine di feriti
Condannando gli ultimi attacchi contro civili nel martoriato Sri Lanka, che hanno lasciato più di 20 morti e dozzine di feriti sul campo, l’ufficio delle Nazioni Unite sull’isola ha oggi fatto appello alla loro immediata protezione e avvisato del peggioramento delle condizioni nell’est, dove migliaia di persone sono rimaste intrappolate nei combattimenti tra il Governo e le Liberazione Tigri Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
“Le Nazioni Unite condannano il deliberato bersagliamento di civili e deplorano gli ultimi incidenti riguardanti due bus civili che hanno portato alla morte di 20 civili innocenti e dozzine di feriti”, ha detto il Coordinatore dell’Ufficio Umanitario.
Le Nazioni Unite hanno già organizzato una estesa operazione di supporto al Governo, attraverso le autorità locali e le agenzie collegate, per proteggere ed assistere con gli aiuti base necessari oltre 70,000 persone del distretto di Batticaloa, ma hanno ribadito che sia le autorità che le Tigri Tamil proteggano i civili.
I combattimenti tra le forze governative e LTTE si sono intensificati da Aprile 2006, malgrado il cessate il fuoco concordato nel 2002 che aspirava a porre termine al conflitto durato più di 20 anni e che ha provocato circa 70,000 morti.

UN calls for the protection of civilians in Sri Lanka as over 20 killed and dozens maimed
Condemning the latest attacks on civilians in strife-torn Sri Lanka, which left more than 20 dead and dozens maimed, the United Nations office on the island today called for their immediate protection and warned of worsening conditions in the east, where thousands of people remain trapped by the fighting between the Government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
“The United Nations condemns the deliberate targeting of civilians and deplores the latest incidents involving two civilian buses which resulted in the deaths of over 20 innocent civilians with dozens maimed and injured,” the Office of the Resident and Humanitarian Co-ordinator said.
The UN has already mounted an extensive operation supporting the Government through local authorities and partner agencies to protect and assist with the basic humanitarian needs of over 70,000 individuals across the district of Batticaloa, but it also underscored that both the authorities and the Tamil Tigers must protect civilians.
Fighting between Government troops and the LTTE has intensified since April last year, despite a ceasefire agreed in 2002 aimed at ending the conflict that has lasted for more than 20 years and claimed almost 70,000 lives.
