Israele e Palestina devono entrambi fare passi avanti nel processo di pace, parla Ban Ki-Moon
Il segretario delle Nazioni Unite Ban Ki Mon dopo aver incontrato ieri a Gerusalemme il Primo Ministro Israeliano Ehud Olmert ha affermato “è decisivo che Israele e Palestina s’impegnino per ridurre le tensioni in Medio Oriente allo scopo di avanzare nel processo di pace”.
“La sicurezza e la difesa d’Israele a lungo termine e la creazione dello stato Palestinese vanno di pari passo”, ha aggiunto il giorno dopo le consultazioni con il presidente palestinese Mahmoud Abbas a Ramallah, considerando fermamente il bisogno di dare spazio politico al nuovo governo di Unità Nazionale Palestinese formato dal movimento di Hamas e di Al Fatah di Mahmoud Abbas.
Ha inoltre detto “dobbiamo adoperarci nelle settimane e nei mesi futuri per avanzare nel dialogo politico, poiché l’alternativa rappresenterebbe una rinvigorita stasi dei negoziati che significherebbe solo più estremismo e violenza”.
Un primo passo fondamentale per il nuovo governo palestinese è agire contro il lancio di missili provenienti da Gaza e assicurare il rilascio del Caporale Gilad Shalit, rapito in Israele lo scorso giugno e portato nella striscia di Gaza da militanti palestinesi.
Mr Ban ha puntualizzato che Israele deve invece compiere azioni decisive per quanto riguarda gli avamposti, i checkpoint e le entrate fiscali trattenute dal governo palestinese l’anno precedente.
Entrambi le parti devono mantenere gli obblighi e le responsabilità esistenti, inclusi quelli definiti nella Road Map, il documento redatto dal quartetto diplomatico – Onu, Unione Europea, Russia e Stati Uniti – che predisponga iniziative reciproche per raggiungere una rapida conclusione del conflitto tra i due stati, con la coesistenza pacifica di uno Stato Palestinese accanto a quello Israeliano.
Nel suo incontro con Olmert, Mr Ban ha inoltre discusso la questione nucleare iraniana e la situazione in Libano, dove Israele ha combattuto l’estate scorsa una guerra di 34 giorni contro gli hezbbollah.

Israel, Palestinians must both take steps on path to peace, Ban Ki-moon says
It is crucial that both Israel and the Palestinians take steps to reduce tensions in the Middle East in order to advance the peace process, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in Jerusalem today after meeting Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.
“The long-term safety and security of Israel and the creation of a Palestinian State go hand in hand,” he added, a day after holding talks with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah, noting stressed the need to give some “political space” to the new Palestinian National Unity Government formed by Hamas and Mr. Abbas’s Fatah movement.
“We must use the weeks and months ahead to advance the political dialogue, since the alternative is renewed stagnation, which only means more extremism and violence,” he said.
A vital first step on that issue is for the new Palestinian Government to take action against the firing of rockets from Gaza and to secure the release of Corporal Gilad Shalit, kidnapped from Israel and taken into the Gaza Strip by Palestinian militants last June, Mr. Ban noted.
He also stressed that Israel’s actions are very crucial, particularly as regards settlements, outposts, checkpoints and revenues withheld from the Palestinian Government for the past year.
Existing obligations and commitments need to be kept by both parties, he insisted, including those the Road Map, the blueprint drafted by the Diplomatic Quartet – the UN, European Union, Russia and United States – that lays out mutual steps to achieve a two-State solution to the conflict, with Israel and Palestine living side by side in peace.
In his meeting with Mr. Olmert Mr. Ban also discussed the Iranian nuclear issue and the situation in Lebanon where Israel fought a 34-day war with Hizbollah last summer.
