Diplomatico Haitiano eletto a guidare il Consiglio Economico e Sociale ONU nel 2008
L’Ambasciatore Haitiano Léo Mérorès è stato eletto dal Consiglio Economico e Sociale (ECOSOC) delle Nazioni Unite come Presidente per il 2008, subentrando al Lituano Dalius Cekuolis.Rivolgendosi ai 54 membri che lo hanno eletto, il diplomatico Haitiano ha pagato tributo al suo predecessore per la guida del Consiglio attraverso un anno importante che ha visto alcuni cambiamenti nel panorama del Consiglio.
Ha enfatizzato l’importanza di costruire sul progresso che il suo predecessore aveva stabilito e di aiutare a portare i frutti dei miglioramenti e dei nuovi mandati dell’ECOSOC come per le raccomandazioni risultate dal Summit Mondiale del 2005.
Il Segretario Generale Ban Ki-moon, anch’esso presente al meeting, è stato enfatico sul ruolo dell’ECOSOC nell’andare avanti sull’agenda dello sviluppo. “Il Consiglio è veramente in una posizione di forza unica per stringere forti legami con tutti gli attori, incluso la società civile e il settore privato, e di massimizzare il potenziale del sistema ONU per servire i bisogni dell’umanità.”
Le due nuove funzioni dell’ECOSOC sono state introdotte durante la sessione del 2007 – il Riesame Annuale Ministeriale e il Forum della Cooperazione allo Sviluppo.

Haitian diplomat elected to lead UN Economic and Social Council in 2008
Haitian Ambassador Léo Mérorès has been elected by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) as its President for 2008, succeeding Dalius Cekuolis of Lithuania.
Addressing the 54-member body after his election, the Haitian diplomat paid tribute to his predecessor for leading the Council through an important year that saw some changes in the outlook of the Council.
He emphasized the importance of building on progress that his predecessor has established and to help bring to fruition improvements and new mandates of ECOSOC as per the recommendations of the outcome of the 2005 World Summit.
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, also present at the meeting, was emphatic on the role of ECOSOC in advancing the development agenda. “The Council indeed is in a unique position to forge closer ties with all actors, including civil society and the private sector, and to maximize the potential of the UN system to serve the needs of humanity.”
Two new functions of ECOSOC were introduced at its 2007 substantive session – the Annual Ministerial Review and the Development Cooperation Forum.
